If you’re new to our blog let me introduce you to our family. My husband and I met in 2018. We got engaged and planned a wedding for May 2020. Then a global pandemic hit and we pumped the brakes (more than once and for a variety of reasons). This is why we call it our re-story. We eventually married in May of 2021 and moved into our current home that summer (the Welborn Wilderness Compound). Blending our families has been a crazy and amazing adventure – it’s our beautiful chaos.
We have four kids – Sissy (15), Little Big Man (13), Sweet Willy (12), and Peachy (11). Three of four kids play basketball and our youngest does aerial silk acrobatics. They keep us busy and I’m reminded by others who are past this season to soak it up because it will be gone before we know it. We get a ton of windshield time which is some of my favorite time with our kids. Hearing them sing, tell stories or just watching them sleep – these are the moments.
Our boys have been playing basketball together for four years. They’ve played on several teams and my husband has coached the last last two years. They earned the name Dynamic Duo a couple years ago. They each play to their strengths and challenge each other to get better. They look for each other on the court and play with a similar tempo. My husband has coached them hard and demands maximum effort and teamwork.
Two weeks ago they both made their junior high basketball team. I had many feelings going into tryouts. However, with all that is going on in the world it seemed so ridiculous to be nervous about junior high basketball tryouts. Last year only one made the team and we walked through a season with them playing on separate teams. We made the most of it as a family, but I was hoping this year would be different.
I was reminded of two things the week of tryouts. It doesn’t matter how big or small the thing is I’m walking through, God wants to hear from me. That’s how I deepen my connection with Christ. I take everything to Him. Next, lean into your prayer warriors – your people. My experience is they slow you down and help center you. I want to share this amazing prayer a dear friend of mine sent me the first morning of tryouts. I feel so blessed to be walking this road with other mamas striving to balance athletics with Christianity, trying to align our hearts to God’s will, and to make time to pray with such intention for others.
Dear Lord,
Please let B and W use the talent you have given them along with their work ethic to showcase the best version of themselves in tryouts tonight. Let the coaches recognize them not just their talent but their coachability and positive attitude. Let W’s leadership and B’s tenacity shine bright like the light you put in both of them. And let whatever your will for them be—and let them be grateful for the opportunity to try out! And calm the mama heart and help her to trust in whatever your plan is for each of her boys!
Amen

Thank you for sharing, Justine. What an adorable picture of the boys. Love hearing about their sibling relationships, connection, and support of one another. -Jenna
