A Few of My Favorite Things

Recently, a couple friends came over for an afternoon of sun and fun. As they were leaving one of the girls asked her mom to list three of her favorite things. I smiled as I listened to my friend’s response, and watched her kiddo smile as one of the things she listed was snuggling with them. The next morning I thought about this question and jotted down my three favorite things in my gratitude journal. Here we go!

My first favorite thing is holding hands with my husband. From the very beginning of our story we’ve held hands. I find it to be romantic, and I feel like I belong to him and he belongs to me. There is just something about holding hands with my husband that makes my heart zing, and it’s one of my favorite things!

My second favorite thing is watching our kids play together in our yard. We have worked hard to make this house our home. With help from our kids we’ve created landscaping beds, planted flowers, built a waterfall…a patio…a dock, and a treehouse! I love watching the kids just be kids – dirty, smelly, and enjoying nature. My hope is they’re building relationships that will last a lifetime, and they will have fond memories of growing up here.

My third favorite thing is walking. I was a runner for 12 years. I loved it! The open road, the awesome cardio, and the way I felt after a PR in a race. However, I eventually found myself in physical therapy (more than once) and it was no longer enjoyable. It hurt to run. After a couple years of cycling and yoga my body feels restored, but I don’t love running the way I used to. So I walk! Walking is a way for me to hit the pause button and get fresh air. It’s a way I can connect with God and sort through things. I love the sunrises, the sunsets, the plants and all the sounds. Walking is a way for me to appreciate the present.

So this summer – no matter how busy our lives get – I am committed to enjoying a few of my favorite things…holding hands with my husband, watching our kids play in the yard, and going for long walks.

What are a few of your favorite things? I look forward to reading your comments!

  1. Riding my bike.. it’s just the road and my bike, no one else. It’s freedom from everything in your day to day life.

My grandchildren … I absolutely love watching them grow and each one in a different way. They bring so much love into my life.

Early mornings , when it’s so quite and no one is out and about yet.

  3. Thanks for sharing! I very much enjoy following your blog.
Some of my favorite things recently have been the quiet of early mornings (like a couple of you have already mentioned!). It’s just so peaceful and serene. And it’s when the sunrise comes!
I’m not always a fan of large crowds or big parties, but I do love meeting new people and hearing their story one-on-one. I’m so blessed that I get to do this lots in my job. I have found a whole new love for people these past several years.

  4. Loved this! It made me think this morning. It’s certainly hard to complain when you’re feeling gratitude and my favorite things evolve as I enter different life stages. My favorite things – spending Saturdays with my husband; spending time with my son and grandkids; walking or sitting on the deck by the creek; and fellowship with friends. (I know, that’s 4.)
